In the second of our series of blogs about the origins of natural stone, we are looking at the provenance of limestone. A beautiful stone, limestone grows in popularity every year thanks to it contemporary look and varied finishes.
Limestone is sedimentary rock composed of calcite and aragonite minerals. It was first discovered by Geologist Belsazar Hacquet in 1778. The grains that appear in limestone are skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminfera. Because of this it is most commonly formed in clear, shallow marine waters.
Limestone can be found virtually anywhere an ancient sea existed, France, Sweden, America, Vietnam and even our home county Yorkshire are home to limestone quarries.
